Griffin Capital was appointed to evaluate and develop strategies to monetize IPR, non-recurring engineering and contract rights to a unique High-Altitude, Long Operation stratospheric communications platform.

We identified potential claimants, designed and managed a global market study of over 90 leading end-users, competing providers, suppliers and participants in the market for airborne and space-based remote sensing technologies and GIS services and prepared a business plan and information memorandum.

On behalf of a listed US growth-stage technology company, we critiqued their strategies to develop, capitalize and launch the “Stratellite”, a high-altitude “aerostat” communications platform.

A proof-of-concept prototype was completed for initial flight testing in California.

On behalf of Hughes Space & Communications (then a unit of GM Hughes Electronics), we developed and implemented non-recourse project finance strategies for the Ka-band Spaceway™ satellite system, an extension of Hughes’s DirecPC and DirecTV FSS services.

Initial deployment was to deliver “broadband on demand” by providing point-to-point broadband communications capability to serve India’s vast underserved rural population.

Our previous work with Hughes included $110 million transponder lease financing of SBS-6 (now DirecTV), project financing for United States Satellite Broadcasting (a unit of Hubbard Broadcasting subsequently acquired by DirecTV) and refinance strategies for the Bonum-1 FSS, hosting Russia’s NTVPlus direct broadcast service.  Hughes Space & Communications was acquired by Boeing who now manage the Spaceway flee
